Telenor Serbia went dark during Earth Hour

By switching off their lights on 27 March for one hour, a number of Telenor Group companies across the world once again symbolically expressed their determination to take an active role in responding on climate changes. Telenor headquarters were in darkness in Norway, as well as main office buildings in a number of the countries where Telenor operates, among which Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, and Sweden.

Energy savings with Earth hour

The effect of the energy saving during the one hour at headquarters, equals the energy consumption of a private house in 30 days. Telenor in Serbia saved around 75,61 KWh or 0,055 CO2 tonn by switching the lights at the main building and six shops for one hour.

Inspired by the Earth hour initiative in 2009, DiGi employees in Malaysia voted for “earth hour” on daily bases. Since then 70% of office lighting at DiGi’s main building has been switched off every working day from noon to 2.00pm. Thanks to this initiative, DiGi has reduced its CO2 emission for around 63 tonn in one year.

Energy efficient buildings

With a clear goal to reduce CO2 emissions Telenor Group also focuses on reducing energy consumption in its buildings by implementing energy efficient building design and management.

Main Telenor office building in Hungary has a highly energy-saving and cost-efficient heat pump system, which was awarded the prestigious “Environmental Savings Prize” for its heat pump in 2009.

At company headquarters at Fornebu we have implemented the ventilation and lightning systems and temperature adjustments, expected to save 5-8 per cent of the total energy consumption.
