Telenor sees significant opportunities in helping its customers to reduce the CO2 emissions and energy cost of their operations.

The “Smart 2020” report indicated that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) can contribute to a 15 percent reduction in global CO2 emissions by 2020.  ICT has a significant potential to contribute to the fight against climate change by eliminating the need for physical products or activities through smart solutions and improved efficiency.

As a leader of the mobile industry, Telenor Group has a significant role to play in providing innovative solutions and shaping the future, low carbon society.

Telenor`s contribution is realized through smart use of communications, specifically upgrades to the existing voice and broadband services as well as developing new solutions related to Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology.

Telenor has established Telenor Connexion and Telenor Objects to develop the M2M business within the Group. In addition, some Telenor Business Units have already started to market a portfolio of sustainable services that enable energy and CO2 savings for their customers, for instance telephone/video conferencing, Unified Communications, server virtualization, and more.

Business growth is driven by advances in technology, innovative new services and changing customer behaviours. At Telenor, we continue to improve the customer experience and develop innovative future business models in order to continuously develop our role in a changing industry.

Unified Communications to change how business works

 

Telenor is the first telecom operator to launch a Unified Communications (UC) solution on the Norwegian market. With this service, employees can see from their own PC client whether colleagues are free or busy on their mobile phones. This service obtains information from the Telenor mobile network about whether the colleague in question is available, and this status information is then sent to the employee’s PC (Unified Communications client).

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology is at the heart of green communication technology, as smart systems can enable eco-efficiency in energy grids, traffic management, buildings and logistics. Therefore M2M development is a key focus area for future growth in Telenor Group.

M2M is a rapidly growing area. Across the globe, more and more industries are bringing integrated connectivity solutions to machines, devices and vehicles. M2M services will save customers money as well as help to reduce emissions and streamline monitoring processes.

Telenor is not only one of the most advanced mobile operators in the area of M2M, but also the dominant provider of wireless M2M connectivity, according to Berg Insight – a leading M2M industry analyst.

The creation of Telenor Connexion and Telenor Objects is a proof of Telenor’s dedicated belief in the future of M2M. It is also an acknowledgement of the fact that managed M2M connectivity is completely different from traditional mobile operator services.

Telenor’s M2M perspective

The M2M initiatives in Telenor Group are mainly handled by two subsidiaries – Telenor Objects and Telenor Connexion. Telenor Objects works closely with hardware partners to build and make available a “device library” with appropriate software.

Telenor Connexion’s business offer is to provide managed connectivity solutions on a global basis for various industries and applications. The company has 10 years of experience in realising wireless connectivity for machines and vehicles across the globe.

The purpose of M2M applications may vary but the overall objective is naturally to help customers to be more efficient and improve competitiveness.

Connected products bring business value through:

  • Improved operational efficiency – real-time access to monitor and manage remote assets such as machines and equipment help minimize down-time and improve operational levels
  • Reduced cost – enable you to manage and monitor assets remotely no matter where the unit is located

Some of our initiatives

Telenor has significant business opportunities in offering customers services that reduce their CO2 emissions and energy costs through smart use of our communication solutions. Many of our country operations are already marketing a portfolio of sustainable services that enable energy and CO2 savings for their customers, such as telephone/video conferencing and Unified Communications.

Telenor Group is considering initiatives for innovation and technology development that will deliver lower CO2 emissions. This may include communications solutions related to improvement of energy efficiency in other sectors, including Smart Grid, Smart Cities and energy efficiency in buildings.

Currently, Telenor’s research is focused on the optimization of the network infrastructure for M2M, including standardisation, and on M2M industry insight activities. Telenor is also actively contributing to the GSMA Embedded Mobile Initiative and participating in leading international research activities within M2M.

Research partnership with SINTEF

Telenor has entered into a long-term research collaboration with SINTEF – the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia. Our industry and competitive environment are changing and this research collaboration means that we are renewing our approach to innovation.

As a part of the SINTEF-Telenor research collaboration, Telenor will contribute to the foundation of the new The Norwegian Smartgrid Centre in Trondheim – with ambitions to strengthen Norwegian industry position within Smart Grids through “lighthouse” projects with international visibility. In addition, the SINTEF-collaboration is also contributing to GSMA’s cross-industry initiative on Embedded Mobile with one of the three work-streams focusing on Smart Grids.
